Contemporary Cottage Garden Design; Our brief involved designing cottage garden theme with a contemporary twist for this urban garden in the Lisvane area of Cardiff.
The Brief
This design was for another of our Cardiff based clients. She asked us for a modern twist on the cottage garden – a ‘Contemporary Cottage Garden’. So after the initial meeting with her we submitted a mood board with the ideas based upon our conversation and her aspirations for the space. This gave her a feel for our concept. Because which she was so happy with this we got the commission. So then we proceeded to the design stage.
The main path through the contemporary cottage garden is Golden Flint pea gravel. Which dissolves into the Blue Pennant sandstone paved pergola area. Because this sandstone is local to the area and has wonderful rich colours of blue greys and rusty reds from the iron oxides it contains. So its included in the paved entertaining area, wall cladding and informal path around the lawn. This is topped with an oak pergola. Which will be made by her husband. Who happens to be a master craftsmen carpenter.
Planting
There is some existing planting. Where possible we always try and incorporate these things into the design. The rest of the planting includes trees, shrubs and plants such as:
- Pittisporum tenuifolium
- Hydrangea paniculata
- Alchemilla mollis
- Salvia nemorosa
- Astrantia major
- Alliums
- Iris
- Geraniums
- Anemone
- Verbena
- Thalictrum delavayi
- Rosa glauca
- Acer palmatum ‘Bloodgood’… as well as a few others.
